U.S. Orders China to Close Houston Consulate

HONG KONG—The U.S. requested the abrupt closure of China’s consulate in Houston, a dramatic escalation in bilateral tensions that Beijing condemned as outrageous and unparalleled.

Washington’s need, issued Tuesday, marked “a political provocation unilaterally introduced by the U.S.,” Chinese International Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin stated Wednesday at a routine briefing in Beijing. “China urges the U.S. to immediately rescind its erroneous conclusion, if not China will undertake genuine and necessary responses.”
